100% ethanol Innova: what the minister actually said
Speaking at an event, Gadkari said he had received an invitation to the October launch of Toyota's 100% ethanol Innova. This is a flex-fuel version (an engine tuned to run on pure ethanol, not petrol). He claimed its running cost would feel like using petrol priced around ₹25 per litre. He also said the vehicle would generate 60% electricity while running, likely pointing to a hybrid setup. Toyota itself hasn't shared full specs or a price yet. So treat the ₹25/litre figure as a claim, not a tested number.

Ethanol is cheaper per litre than petrol, but it also gives lower mileage, so real savings are smaller than they sound. Even so, if the ₹25/litre-equivalent claim holds, the ethanol Innova would run cheaper than any petrol or hybrid Innova Hycross. Against the diesel Crysta, it's closer. The diesel returns 15.1 kmpl (ARAI, a government test that runs higher than real driving), and diesel remains one of the cheapest fuels per km for heavy users. Fleet operators doing 3,000+ km a month will want hard, tested figures before they switch.
Price & variants: where will the flex-fuel Innova sit?
Toyota hasn't announced the ethanol Innova's price. Logically, it should slot between the diesel Crysta and the pricier hybrid Hycross. For reference, the current diesel Crysta lineup runs: GX at ₹19.72 lakh, GX Plus at ₹21.15 lakh, VX at ₹24.93 lakh, and the top ZX at ₹26.63 lakh (all ex-showroom, manual). The GX Plus adds more comfort kit than the base GX. The VX brings a big jump in features. The ZX is the fully loaded one. Ethanol engines cost more to build, so expect the flex-fuel version to carry a premium over these numbers.

Ethanol availability: can you actually fill it up?
This is the real catch. Pure ethanol (E100) pumps are still rare in India, mostly limited to a handful of cities. Gadkari points out ethanol is used in 19 countries with no vehicle complaints. That's true abroad, but it means little if your Tier-2 city has zero ethanol pumps. Before buying, check whether E100 is sold near you. A flex-fuel engine can also run on regular petrol blends, so you won't be stranded, but you lose the ₹25/litre saving the moment you fall back on petrol.
Diesel Innova Crysta: still worth buying at ₹19.72 lakh?
If you need an Innova today, the diesel Crysta is proven and available. Every variant uses the same 2.4L diesel, making 148 bhp at 3400 rpm, paired with a 5-speed manual. ARAI mileage is 15.1 kmpl across the range. It seats 7 and carries the Innova badge's biggest strength: bulletproof reliability and strong resale. There's no petrol option here, so the ethanol version will be Toyota's first alternative-fuel play for this nameplate. For airport taxis and long-distance family duty, the diesel still makes plain sense.
Wait for ethanol, or buy the Crysta/Hycross now?
If ethanol pumps are common in your city and you're okay waiting a couple of months, the flex-fuel Innova could cut your fuel bills meaningfully. But if you drive daily, need the car now, or live where E100 isn't sold, don't wait. The diesel Crysta at ₹19.72 lakh is a known, dependable buy. And if you want the newest tech with a self-charging hybrid, the Innova Hycross (₹19.53–32.95 lakh) is already here. My pick for most buyers today: the diesel Crysta VX at ₹24.93 lakh, the value sweet spot before the ethanol picture gets clearer.
