THE VERDICT — MAY vs APRIL
The market plateaued at a high level: total PV dispatches were 4,40,808 versus April's 4,41,721 — a marginal -0.2% MoM, but still a powerful +26.0% YoY. After April's record, May proved demand has settled at that new ceiling rather than rolling over.
- •Maruti set a fresh all-time high (1,90,337, +1.4% MoM), pushing share back to 43.2% — its strongest grip on the market in over a year.
- •The #2–#4 race tightened. Tata held #2 (59,090) just 1,069 units ahead of a resurgent Mahindra (58,021, +3.0% MoM), while Hyundai (47,837) slipped to its softest month of 2026 (-7.8% MoM).
- •Honda was the month's surprise (+25.6% MoM) on a City rebound; Kia, Toyota and Maruti also grew, but Renault (-24%), Skoda (-16.4%) and Citroen (-23.1%) gave back recent launch-driven gains.
- •SUVs still own the charts: 8 of the top-10 models were SUVs, led by Tata Punch (20,208) and Nexon (19,100); Maruti's Dzire (24,546) was the lone sedan at the very top.
Bottom line: a flat headline hides a reshuffle underneath — Maruti pulling away at the top, Mahindra breathing down Tata's neck for #2, and Hyundai the one big name needing fresh launches to arrest its share slide.
