MG's August number looks like a win on paper: 7,508 units, up over 14% from a year ago. But it's actually down from July, and there's a simple reason. The new Hector Tomahawk EV only landed at dealer showrooms in the last days of the month, so its real volume hasn't shown up yet. In short, this is the old line-up's last solo month before the festive push.
MG August 2026 sales: 7,508 units, 14% YoY up but 8% MoM down
JSW MG Motor India shipped 7,508 units to dealers (wholesale) in August 2026. That's 930 units more than the 6,578 units it sold in August 2025, a jump of 14.14% year-on-year. So compared to last year, MG is clearly selling more. But look month-on-month, and the picture softens. July 2026 saw 8,158 units, so August is actually down 650 units, a 7.97% dip. MG says both its petrol/diesel (ICE) and electrified (New Energy Vehicle) models drove the number.
Why August dipped vs. July: the Tomahawk EV was in transit, not invoiced.
Here's the catch with wholesale figures. They count cars shipped to dealers, not cars sold to you and me. The Hector Tomahawk EV was launched in August, but dispatches to showrooms only started at the very end of the month. So most of those cars weren't billed to dealers in time to boost the August count. That's a big part of why August slipped below July. Think of it as a quiet month before the storm, with a fresh SUV waiting in the wings.

Tomahawk EV is now at dealers; when do the volumes show up?
MG has confirmed dispatches of the Tomahawk EV to showrooms across India have begun. Customer deliveries start in September 2026, so the real sales bump should show in the September and October numbers. The Tomahawk is MG's first SUV on its ADAPT platform (a base that can take different power types). It comes as a pure electric (EV) or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV, a petrol engine paired with a big battery and motor you can charge). The PHEV waits longer: test drives and deliveries only start in November 2026.
Tomahawk EV pricing and the BaaS math you should know
The Tomahawk EV starts at ₹19.49 lakh ex-showroom (introductory, before road tax, registration, and insurance, which vary by state). MG's twist is Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), where you don't buy the battery upfront. Under BaaS, the EV starts at ₹13.99 lakh plus a rental of ₹4.90 per km. That's ₹5.50 lakh less to drive off, but you pay per kilometer for the battery. The PHEV is ₹25.69 lakh, or ₹21.79 lakh under BaaS plus ₹3.20/km. These introductory prices apply only to a limited number of bookings, so early buyers save the most.
What festive-season sales could look like with the Tomahawk live?
September onwards is when MG's number should climb again. Deliveries start this month, right into the festive buying season when families upgrade cars. The Tomahawk adds a fresh EV and PHEV to a line-up that already sells across price bands. If bookings are healthy, the Tomahawk could lift MG well above the 8,158-unit July mark in the coming months. One honest caveat: wholesale numbers can swing on stock timing, so don't read one soft month as a slowdown.
