The Tata Punch just crossed 8 lakh domestic sales in a little over 57 months. That makes it the fastest compact SUV in India to hit the mark, beating the Maruti Brezza by 23 months. And with a record 21,006 units sold in June 2026, demand is only getting stronger.
8 lakh sales in 57 months: why the Punch is India's fastest compact SUV
Tata dispatched 797,479 Punch units from its October 2021 launch to the end of June 2026. The last 2,521 needed to cross 8 lakh came in the first days of July. It took just under 57 months from launch, a record for the segment. Compare that to the Maruti Brezza's roughly 80 months, the Hyundai Venue's 85, and even Tata's own Nexon at 89 months. The Punch got here 23 to 32 months quicker than those rivals. It's now the second Tata SUV, after the Nexon, to cross 8 lakh.

SUVJune 2026: 21,006 units and Q1 bestseller status. What's driving it?
June 2026 was the Punch's best month ever, with 21,006 units dispatched. It was India's bestselling SUV in the first quarter of FY2027, moving 60,321 units. Monthly sales have topped 20,000 three times, all in 2026. Between February and June, the Punch added another 1 lakh units. The big push came from the January 2026 facelift. Tata added exterior and interior changes, new features, a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine and a CNG-AMT option. That wider choice pulled in more buyers who earlier looked elsewhere. Note: These figures combine petrol, CNG and Punch EV, since Tata doesn't split ICE and electric numbers.
Tata Punch price: ₹5.70–10.67 lakh across petrol, CNG and turbo
The petrol range starts at ₹5.70 lakh for the Smart trim (ex-showroom). CNG begins at ₹6.80 lakh. The turbo-petrol tops out at ₹9.90 lakh for the Accomplished Plus S manual, while the full range stretches to ₹10.67 lakh. The on-road price will be higher; add road tax, registration and insurance, which vary by state. In EMI terms, the Punch works out to roughly ₹8,205 a month. Popular mid-trims like the Adventure start at ₹7.70 lakh and add the 360-degree camera and sunroof. That Adventure trim is the sweet spot for most families.
Three powertrains explained: 87 bhp NA vs 118 bhp turbo vs iCNG
The base engine is a 1.2 Revotron petrol, making 87 bhp. It's fine for city runs and light highway use. The 1.2 turbo-petrol makes 118 bhp and 170 Nm of torque (pulling power), paired to a 6-speed manual. That's the one for buyers who want real punch on the Mumbai-Pune Motorway. The iCNG option makes 72 bhp in CNG mode and 87 bhp in petrol mode, with a factory 60-litre tank. CNG is the cheapest to run, ideal if you drive a lot in the city and want low fuel bills. Pick the NA for value, the turbo for fun, and the CNG for daily savings.
Punch vs Magnite, Exter, Kiger: how it stacks up
The Punch petrol starts at ₹5.70 lakh, just ₹0.05 lakh above the Nissan Magnite's base of ₹5.65 lakh. But the Magnite climbs to ₹10.96 lakh at the top. The Hyundai Exter runs ₹5.81–9.46 lakh, and the Renault Kiger runs ₹5.81–10.35 lakh. The Punch's tighter spread means better value at the top end, especially the ₹9.90 lakh turbo manual. Where the Punch really pulls ahead is safety. It's got a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating with 6 airbags, ESP and hill hold as standard. It also has class-leading 193 mm ground clearance, handy on broken roads and tall speedbreakers.

SUVResale, waiting period and should you buy: what 8 lakh sales mean
Eight lakh sales in 57 months tells you two things: strong resale value and almost no waiting-period risk. A model this popular holds its price better when you sell later. Stock is easy to get, so you won't wait months for delivery. The January 2026 facelift is still fresh, so there's no point holding out for the next update. If you want a proven, safe, easy-to-own compact SUV with three fuel choices, the Punch fits the bill. Our pick: the Adventure trim for families who want the 360-degree camera and sunroof without overspending, or the ₹9.90 lakh turbo manual if you crave the extra pep. The one honest niggle is that the base petrol's 87 bhp feels ordinary once you've tried the turbo.
