Tata Punch became India's best-selling car in June 2026 with 21,006 units, pushing sibling Nexon (18,335) to second.
Key facts
- Punch: 21,006 units, #1, 13.6% market share
- Nexon: 18,335 units, #2, 11.75% share
- Punch growth: +101% YoY, +3.9% MoM
- Nexon growth: +58% YoY, -4% MoM
- Tata total: 62,076 units (2nd carmaker, +67.4% YoY)
- Both span roughly ₹6L–₹15L with petrol + EV options
June 2026 had reversed the order at the top. For the first time, India’s best-selling car was a small SUV – Tata Punch. It even nudged past its larger sibling, the Nexon. None of the Maruti models could match either of them.
The numbers: Two Tatas, over 39,000 cars
Punch sold 21,006 units in June. That’s a whopping 101% increase over June 2025 and 3.9% up on May. The Nexon sold 18,335 units, up 58% YoY but down 4% from May. The two together recorded 39,341 Tata units. This is more than the entire Mahindra (60,393) lineup from just two cars.
What’s behind it: Plenty of fuel choices, one clear winner
The Punch got a facelift in January, adding a turbo-petrol engine (peppier to drive) and fresh styling. The Punch. EV was updated in February, fixing slow charging that owners had complained about. Those updates clearly worked. The Nexon plays a wider game: petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric, with many variants priced close together. So there's a Nexon for almost any sub-4-meter SUV budget.
Vs. Rivals: Maruti sells more, but has no single hero
Here's the odd part. Maruti still leads by brand with 147,187 units, about 2.4 times Tata's 62,076. But no single Maruti car crossed 18,000. The Dzire (17,899), WagonR (16,962) and Ertiga (16,111) all trailed the two Tatas. Mahindra's Scorpio-N (14,097) was 7th. Hyundai's Venue barely held 10th at 10,776 units, hit by a fire at a supplier's plant that cut production.
What it means for buyers: waiting periods may rise
Strong demand usually means longer waits, so expect delays on both, especially the updated Punch.EV. Sustained sales also point to solid resale value, which matters if you plan to sell in a few years. Cross-shopping? The Nexon gives you diesel and CNG choices for high running. The Punch offers a lower starting price and that fun turbo-petrol. Both are safe bets now, backed by real volume.
