The diesel G-Class is back. Mercedes-Benz has launched the G 450d at ₹2.90 crore (ex-showroom), making it the most affordable way into a G-Wagen in India. But if you want one from the first batch, move fast, only 50 units are on offer.
Mercedes-Benz G 450d Price: ₹2.90 Crore For 50 Units Only
The G 450d costs ₹2.90 crore (ex-showroom). On-road, add road tax, registration and insurance, so the final figure will be higher and varies by state. That makes it the cheapest G-Class you can buy today. It slots in below the petrol G 63 AMG (₹3.60 crore+) and the electric G 580 (₹3.50 crore+). The catch: the first batch is limited to just 50 cars, so this is a now-or-never call for buyers who wanted the diesel.
What's New In The G 450d vs The Old G 400d?
This is the comeback of diesel in the G-Class after the discontinued G 400d. The boxy shape stays, but there are small changes. The grille now gets four horizontal slats instead of three on the G 400d. It also has redesigned front and rear bumpers, with vertical air inlets up front, plus a roof-edge spoiler for better airflow. It rides on new 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels. Under the skin, the G 450d adds adaptive adjustable damping (suspension that adjusts to the road) and better insulation for a quieter, comfier ride than the G 400d.
Engine & Performance: 367 bhp Diesel + 48V Mild Hybrid
The G 450d packs a bigger, more powerful 3.0-litre inline-six diesel than the old G 400d. It makes 367 bhp and 750 Nm of torque (pulling power, which is what you want for off-roading). It now gets a 48V mild-hybrid system with a 15 kW electric boost that helps low-speed response and smoothness. Power goes through a 9-speed automatic. Off-road numbers stay serious: 241 mm ground clearance, 700 mm water wading depth, and three locking differentials for crawling over tough terrain. It sits on a ladder-frame chassis, the tough underpinning that makes a real off-roader.

Inside, the G 450d gets an AMG Line theme with dual-tone Nappa leather seats and metallic dashboard inserts. You get dual 12.3-inch screens, one for the driver display and one for infotainment, with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The front seats are ventilated and get a massage function, and there's an 18-speaker Burmester 3D sound system with Dolby Atmos. On safety, there's Level-2 ADAS (safety tech that can brake and steer to help you), including lane-keeping assist, active brake assist and a 360-degree camera. A neat off-road trick is the transparent hood view, which shows what's directly under the front of the car, handy over rocks and deep ruts.
G 450d vs Land Rover Defender & Jeep Wrangler
The G 450d has no direct rival at this price. The Land Rover Defender is the closest, since it also offers a diesel and lands roughly in the ₹1.50–2.00 crore range, well under the Mercedes. The Jeep Wrangler is petrol-only and far cheaper at around ₹60–70 lakh, but it's a more basic, hardcore off-roader without this level of luxury. So the G 450d stands alone as the only luxury diesel off-roader in its bracket. You're paying a big premium, but you're also getting the badge and cabin nothing else here matches.
Should You Buy The G 450d? Who It's For
If you want diesel torque for real off-roading and don't want to stretch to the G 63 AMG, this is the sweet spot in the G-Class range. It's more attainable than the AMG and more practical for long drives than the EV. The honest niggle: ₹2.90 crore buys a Defender diesel with change to spare, so this is about the G-Wagen badge as much as the drive. Ideal buyer? A collector or G-Class loyalist who prefers diesel and wants in before the 50-unit batch is gone.
