Here's a Mercedes-AMG that can crawl silently through Bengaluru traffic for over 100 km, then blast to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds when you want it to. The E53 Hybrid is the first electrified AMG sedan in India's E-Class family, and it starts at ₹1.45 crore (ex-showroom). Two editions are on offer, and both are ready to deliver now.
Price & variants: what the ₹3 lakh Racing Edition adds
The Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid comes in two flavours. The Performance Edition is priced at ₹1.45 crore, and the Racing Edition costs ₹1.48 crore (both ex-showroom, India). That's a gap of ₹3 lakh between the two. On-road prices will be higher once you add road tax, registration and insurance, and these vary by state. Mercedes-Benz has not detailed the exact kit split between the two editions, so we'll update this once the full spec sheets land. What's clear is that this sits well above the standard E-Class in the range, into proper performance-sedan money.
Powertrain: 585 hp hybrid, 100+ km EV range, 3.8-second sprint
Under the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine making 449 hp. It's paired with a 120 kW electric motor built into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT nine-speed automatic gearbox. Together they make 585 hp and 750 Nm of torque (pulling power). Hit the Race Start function and output briefly climbs to 612 hp. The result: 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (how fast it reaches highway speed), and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Opt for the AMG Driver's Package and that limit rises to 280 km/h. But the party trick is the battery. A 28.6 kWh pack (21.2 kWh usable) sits under the boot floor, and Mercedes claims over 100 km on the WLTP cycle (a lab test, expect somewhat less in real driving). It can also run at up to 140 km/h in pure electric mode.
Features & tech: rear-axle steering, MBUX and a 17-speaker Burmester
Standard kit includes AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension and the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system, which shuffles torque between the front and rear wheels for grip. There's also active rear-axle steering (the rear wheels turn to help the car handle better). Below 90 km/h they turn opposite the front wheels to tighten turns in tight city lanes. Above 90 km/h they turn the same way to keep the car stable during quick lane changes. Inside, you get AMG sports seats in man-made leather with red contrast stitching, and the latest MBUX system with AMG-specific displays and TRACK PACE. A Burmester 4D surround system with 17 speakers, 730 watts and Dolby Atmos handles the audio. Twenty-inch AMG alloy wheels, the Night Package II and DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps are standard. Cars with the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package add a limited-slip rear differential, dynamic engine mounts, composite brakes and the Race Start function.

SedanCharging & real-world use: is the EV range genuine?
This is where the E53 gets clever for Indian owners. An 11 kW onboard AC charger tops up the battery, and regenerative braking (recovering energy when you slow down) helps along the way. With 100+ km of claimed WLTP range, many owners could finish a daily office commute without ever waking the petrol engine. Even in real driving, that's a genuinely usable electric buffer for city runs. And AMG has held back a slice of the battery just for performance. That means there's always electrical energy in reserve to give the instant boost when you floor it. So it's not a case of a flat battery leaving you with a weak petrol-only car.
Who should buy it, and which edition?
The E53 Hybrid makes sense for one buyer above all: the performance enthusiast who wants a 585 hp toy but drives mostly in the city and hates guilt (and fuel bills) over short runs. You get supercar-quick acceleration and a genuine 100+ km electric commute in the same car. That combination is rare in this price band in India. We don't have direct rival pricing in our catalogue, but at ₹1.45 crore this sits above the standard E-Class LWB and takes on the pricier corner of the sports-sedan world. On the edition choice, the Performance Edition at ₹1.45 crore is the sensible start unless the Racing Edition's extra ₹3 lakh brings kit you specifically want (full details awaited). If you want one car that does both silent commutes and serious speed, the E53 Hybrid fits the bill.
