Mercedes-Benz India has quietly done something no rival luxury brand has bothered with. Every petrol car it has sold since January 2026 can run on E25 fuel, a blend the government hasn't even started selling. It's not a feature you can use today. It's a bet on where India's fuel rules are heading.
What is E25 fuel, and how is it different from the E20 you fill today?
The number after the E is simple: it's the share of ethanol mixed into petrol. So E20 is 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. E25 pushes that to 25% ethanol. Ethanol is a green fuel made mostly from sugarcane in India. The government blends it in to cut how much crude oil we import and to help farmers. Right now, the petrol at your pump is E20, which became the standard from April 2026. E25 is the next step up, but it isn't sold anywhere yet.
Why Mercedes moved to E25 three years before any rule
This is a hedge, not a customer feature. Mercedes-Benz India boss Santosh Iyer put it plainly: they did E25 "so that in case the government decides in the future, the cars will already be ready." The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the body that sets fuel rules, has already notified standards for E22, E25, E27, and even E30 blends. That's a signal the government is preparing the ground. Mercedes did the same trick before. It made its Indian cars E20-ready back in 2020, about three years before E20 became mandatory. So this is a familiar play for the brand: get ahead of the rule book.
E20 vs E25: Mileage hit and what current owners should know
Ethanol carries less energy than pure petrol, so more ethanol usually means slightly lower mileage. SIAM (the carmakers' body) pegs the E20 mileage drop at 2-4%, though some owners of older cars report bigger real-world losses. E25 would nudge that hit a little higher. The good news for Mercedes owners: the company says these cars need no extra changes to run the higher blend. If you bought a petrol Mercedes this year, you're covered for fuel that may or may not arrive. If you own an older Mercedes, it's E20-compatible from 2020, so you're fine at the pump today.
The real problem: Fuel quality, not the blend
Here's the irony. Just weeks before this E25 news, Mercedes-Benz India flagged worries about fuel adulteration (dirty or mixed fuel) in E20 petrol. It warned that inconsistent quality could hurt engine performance and asked for stricter checks. So being ready for a cleaner future blend doesn't fix today's headache. Making the car E25-ready is one thing. Getting clean, consistent fuel from every pump is a separate battle, and that's the one owners actually feel.
E25 petrol, plug-in hybrids and EVs under one roof
Mercedes announced E25 readiness at the launch of the 2026 AMG E 53 plug-in hybrid, priced at ₹1.45 crore ex-showroom. That's the brand's first electrified AMG E-Class in India. The strategy is to stay "powertrain agnostic," meaning no single fuel type is pushed. Iyer says buyers shouldn't be forced into one technology. In segments where Mercedes sells full-electric cars, EVs now make up 22-25% of sales. But 75% of buyers still choose petrol, and E25 petrol is the plan for them.
Should luxury-car buyers care about E25 right now?
Honestly, not much, and not yet. E25 fuel isn't sold at any pump, and the government has given no date. So this doesn't change your day-to-day running cost or mileage today. What it does give you is peace of mind on resale and future-proofing: your car won't be caught out if a higher blend suddenly becomes the norm. For a buyer spending crores, that quiet insurance is worth something. But don't buy a Mercedes because of E25. Buy it for the car; treat E25 as a bonus that may pay off later.
