Strong hybrid explained: 1.6T petrol + 72 bhp e-motor, no plug
This is a strong (self-charging) hybrid, so you never plug it in. Under the bonnet sits a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol making 178 bhp and 265 Nm of torque (pulling power). The electric motor adds 72 bhp and a strong 304 Nm. At low city speeds, the motor can move the car on electric alone. On acceleration and highways, the petrol engine takes over, and braking recharges the battery. It's paired only with a 6-speed automatic.
Mileage: what to expect over the diesel
Kia hasn't shared an ARAI figure (a government mileage test, always higher than real driving) for the Hybrid yet. The diesel returns 14.85 kmpl on ARAI. A strong hybrid this size should do better in stop-go city traffic, where the electric motor does most of the work. Highway numbers will lean on the petrol engine and drop a bit. In real terms, expect meaningfully better city mileage than diesel, which is where a chauffeur-driven MPV spends most of its life.
Hybrid vs diesel: the price and tax math
The Hybrid is expected to undercut the diesel by ₹3.65 lakh at ₹56 lakh versus ₹59.65 lakh. So you pay less upfront and skip diesel noise and vibration. There's a tax angle too. Uttar Pradesh gives a 100% road-tax waiver on strong hybrids, which can save around ₹1.8 lakh on a car this pricey. Features: what the Limousine+ Hybrid gets
The Hybrid comes only in the top Limousine+ spec, so it's loaded. You get a smart air purifier with AQI display, height-adjustable seat-back tables for rear passengers, and leatherette-wrapped door trims. It rides on 18-inch dual-tone aero alloy wheels. There's wireless charging, ambient lighting and cup holders too. It also gets active air flaps and a virtual engine sound system, which warns pedestrians when the car runs silently on electric.
Carnival Hybrid vs MG M9: ₹24L gap, hybrid vs EV
Its only real rival is the MG M9, and the gap is huge. The M9 starts at ₹79.94 lakh and tops out at ₹84.94 lakh. That's nearly ₹24 lakh more than the expected ₹56 lakh Carnival Hybrid. But there's a key difference: the M9 is a pure electric MPV, while the Carnival is a self-charging hybrid. So the Carnival needs no charger and no home wallbox. If you don't have charging sorted, or you do long unplanned trips, the hybrid is the safer pick. If you're EV-ready, the M9 offers zero fuel cost, but at a big premium.
Bookings and launch: when can you buy it?
Bookings are open now. Kia is expected to launch the Carnival Hybrid next month, during the festive season. Kia hasn't confirmed an exact launch date or the booking amount yet. This is the first Carnival in India to offer an alternate powertrain since the MPV arrived here six years ago. Deliveries should follow soon after the launch.
