Toyota has confirmed its best-selling family MPV gets a big update on 26 November 2026. The headline isn't the new grille, it's the engine. The Toyota Innova Hycross facelift will be the brand's first car in India that can run on flex-fuel, meaning petrol mixed with a high share of ethanol. If Toyota's old claim holds true, mileage could jump sharply. But whether you should wait depends on one thing most buyers forget: are there any E85 pumps near you?
What's changing on 26 November?
This is the first major update for the Hycross since it launched in 2022. Two things are new. First, a restyled front that brings it closer to Toyota's bigger SUVs. Second, and far more important, a flex-fuel hybrid engine. Flex-fuel means the car can run on petrol blended with up to 85% ethanol (called E85), and some reports point to an E100 version too. The side profile and tailgate stay the same, so this isn't a full redesign. Think of it as a sharper face plus a clever new engine, not a brand-new car.

MUV/MPVFlex-fuel mileage: can 23.24 kmpl really become 35?
The current strong hybrid returns 23.24 kmpl on the ARAI test (a government mileage test that always reads higher than real driving). Back in 2023, Toyota claimed its flex-fuel hybrid prototype could be up to 50% more fuel-efficient. On paper, that pushes the ARAI figure into the mid-30s. But hold on. Ethanol has less energy than petrol, so the car burns more of it per km. The real saving comes from ethanol being cheaper per litre, not fewer litres used. In real city-and-highway driving today, the hybrid gives around 16-18 kmpl. The flex-fuel version's real-world gain will depend on ethanol pump prices in your area, not just the percentage Toyota quotes.
Exterior: new grille, same shape
The big honeycomb grille makes way for a cleaner, perforated central section that flows into a new bumper. Expect slimmer-looking headlamps and revised fog-lamp housings too. The alloy wheels may get a new design. Everything else, the roofline, the doors, the overall MPV shape carry over unchanged. So from the side or rear, it'll look much like today's Hycross. The changes are mainly at the front.
Interior: what's new inside?
The cabin keeps the same dashboard layout, so don't expect a big redesign here either. Possible additions include new upholstery, a revised driver display, and a bigger touchscreen. Toyota may also sharpen the 360-degree camera (which helps you park in tight spots) and the connected-car features. Comfort kit like the panoramic sunroof, powered seats, and ventilated front seats should continue, with higher trims getting more. Toyota will confirm the exact feature list closer to launch. Until then, treat interior upgrades as mild.
Powertrain: flex-fuel hybrid vs the current engines

Right now, the Hycross is available in two configurations. A 2.0-litre petrol with a CVT gearbox making 170 bhp and 16.13 kmpl. And a 2.0-litre strong hybrid (self-charging, no plug needed) that makes 186 bhp combined and 23.24 kmpl. The strong hybrid drives on its electric motor at low city speeds, calls on the petrol engine when you push, and recharges its battery while braking. The new flex-fuel version is a modified take on this same 2.0-litre hybrid, with different spark plugs, piston rings and fuel-system parts to handle ethanol's corrosion. It's not clear yet whether the current petrol and hybrid engines continue unchanged alongside it.
Price and variants: expect a ₹2–3 lakh premium.
The current Toyota Innova Hycross runs from ₹19.53 lakh for the GX petrol to ₹32.95 lakh for the top ZX(O) hybrid (all ex-showroom). On-road prices add road tax, registration and insurance, and vary by state. All hybrid variants sit at VX and above, starting at ₹26.76 lakh. The facelift's top trims are expected to cost around ₹30–35 lakh. The extra flex-fuel hardware is likely to cost more, so expect the ethanol-capable version to carry a ₹2–3 lakh premium over the regular hybrid. Also worth checking: UP offers a 100% road-tax waiver on strong hybrids (worth over ₹1.8 lakh), which already makes the hybrid cheaper to own there.
Toyota Innova Hycross — Price by variant
| Variant | Ex-showroom price |
|---|---|
| GX | ₹19.53 lakh – ₹19.73 lakh |
| GX (O) | ₹20.84 lakh – ₹21.12 lakh |
| VX | ₹26.76 lakh – ₹26.96 lakh |
| VX (O) | ₹28.77 lakh – ₹28.97 lakh |
| ZX | ₹31.2 lakh – ₹31.35 lakh |
| ZX (O) | ₹31.84 lakh – ₹32.95 lakh |
Rivals: where does flex-fuel leave the Invicto and Crysta?
The closest rival is Toyota's own Maruti Invicto, a rebadged Hycross priced ₹25.02–28.71 lakh. It's the value play if you aren't concerned about flex fuel, and the gap could widen to ₹4-5 lakh against the loaded Hycross. The Innova Crysta diesel (₹19.72–26.63 lakh) still appeals to buyers doing huge highway miles who distrust petrol running costs. The Kia Carens Clavis EV (₹18.04–25 lakh) is the cheaper, all-electric alternative, but needs home charging. The Hycross hybrid remains the top choice for buyers seeking a proven seven-seater that uses fuel efficiently without the need for plugging in.
Verdict: wait for Nov 26, or buy now?
This hinges on three unknowns: the flex-fuel price premium, whether E85 pumps exist in your city, and if Toyota keeps the efficiency gains locked to the flex-fuel trim only. If you're a Crysta diesel owner eyeing a petrol or hybrid move, the update is worth the short wait; you lose nothing by holding on a few weeks. But if you need a Hycross today and have no E85 pumps nearby, the current strong hybrid VX at ₹26.76 lakh remains the sweet spot. Flex-fuel is smart tech, yet it's only as useful as the fuel you can actually buy. For most families, the regular hybrid is still the sensible, *paisa-vasool* choice.
