Maruti Suzuki has set a big goal: sell 9 lakh CNG vehicles in FY27, almost 30% more than last year. The push comes right as CNG prices have crept up, with Delhi seeing a ₹2/kg hike in late May. So if you're eyeing the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG, this is the moment to run the numbers.
The 9 lakh target: Why Maruti is doubling down on CNG now
Maruti says demand for CNG cars jumped after recent global events pushed fuel prices up and made buyers nervous. The company now offers 15 CNG models across its range, from small hatchbacks to SUVs like the Brezza. Its FY27 goal of 9 lakh CNG units is nearly 30% higher than the roughly 7 lakh it did the year before. The odd part? CNG prices themselves have been rising, with Delhi getting two hikes in a single week in May. But even after the ₹2/kg increase, CNG still costs far less per km than petrol, and that's what keeps buyers coming.
Brezza CNG: Price, mileage and the ₹1.89 lakh premium
The Brezza CNG comes only in the base LXi trim, priced at ₹9.29 lakh (ex-showroom). The on-road cost is higher once you add road tax, registration, and insurance, and that varies by state. It returns a claimed 26.90 km/kg, which is a government test figure (real driving will be a bit lower; expect roughly 21-23 km/kg in mixed use). Power drops to 87 bhp on CNG, down from 102 bhp on the petrol version. The petrol LXi starts at ₹7.4 lakh, so the CNG variant asks ₹1.89 lakh more.

Here's the math that matters. The CNG Brezza costs ₹1.89 lakh more than the petrol LXi upfront. But CNG running costs are roughly half of petrol per km, even after the recent price hike. If you drive around 1,500 km a month, the fuel savings can recover that premium in about three to four years. If you drive less than 800 km a month, petrol makes more sense. So CNG is really for high-mileage users, city cab-style running, daily long commutes, and that kind of use.

The Brezza CNG at ₹9.29 lakh sits near the top of compact SUV CNG pricing. The Tata Punch (₹5.7–10.67 lakh) and Hyundai Exter (₹5.81–9.61 lakh) both offer cheaper CNG options, but they're smaller cars with smaller engines. The Nissan Magnite (₹5.65–11.13 lakh) doesn't match the Brezza's proven CNG efficiency. What the Brezza gives you is a bigger, more grown-up SUV with 26.90 km/kg and, now, a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating earned in July 2026 (those are top marks for adult and child protection). If safety and size matter more than saving ₹2-3 lakh, the Brezza justifies its price.
A word on flex-fuel and ethanol
Separate from CNG, India is also pushing ethanol-blended petrol. E20 (petrol mixed with 20% ethanol) is now the norm at most pumps, and the government wants higher blends over time. Ethanol lowers your petrol mileage slightly, around 2-6%, because it packs less energy than pure petrol. The Brezza's petrol engine is built to run on E20 without any warranty worry. So whether you pick petrol or CNG, both are ready for where India's fuel policy is heading.
Should you buy the Brezza CNG now or wait?
With Maruti chasing 9 lakh CNG sales, demand is strong, and waiting periods on popular CNG models can stretch. If you drive a lot every month, the Brezza CNG makes solid sense; the fuel savings are real, and the 5-star safety is reassuring. But remember CNG is offered only in the base LXi trim, so you miss out on the fancier features of higher variants. Petrol buyers get four trims (LXi to ZXi+), an automatic option, and 102 bhp instead of 87. If you want a loaded SUV, go with petrol; if you want the lowest running cost and drive heavily, the CNG fits the bill.
