Kia has launched the Sorento in India at ₹27.99 lakh, and it goes straight for the Toyota Fortuner. This is Kia's new flagship, a proper three-row SUV that sits above everything else the brand sells here except the Carnival. There are 31 variants, and the top hybrid touches ₹40.39 lakh.
The headline is choice. No other SUV at this price lets you pick between a big diesel and a proper strong hybrid, between two driven wheels or four, and between six seats or seven.

Two engines, two very different characters
The diesel is the familiar formula done well. That 442 Nm figure matters more than the power; it means effortless overtakes with seven aboard and luggage in the boot.
The hybrid is the interesting one. In town it crawls on electric power and sips fuel, and there is no plug, no charging, no range maths. Kia has not published ARAI numbers yet.
| Diesel | Strong Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 2.2L turbo-diesel | 1.6L turbo-petrol + electric motor |
| Power | 190 bhp | 178 bhp engine + 64 bhp motor |
| Torque | 442 Nm | 265 Nm engine + 264 Nm motor |
| Gearbox | 8-speed DCT | 6-speed automatic |
| Drive | 2WD / AWD | 2WD / AWD |
Simple rule: highways and hills, take the diesel. Mostly city with the odd trip, the hybrid will make more sense.

The cabin is the selling point
Slide in and the Sorento feels a class above its price. The dashboard is one sweep of screen, two 12.3-inch displays under a single curve, running Kia's newest ccNC software that updates over the air.
The details are properly premium. Dual-zone climate with vents for all three rows, a 10-way powered driver seat, ventilated and heated front seats higher up, Bose audio, and a dial-type gear selector with paddle shifters.
Six-seat versions get captain chairs with one-touch walk-in for the third row. The middle row slides and reclines, the third row genuinely takes children or shorter adults, and the boot grows to 813 litres with row three folded.
Size and space
| Length | 4,745 mm |
|---|---|
| Width | 1,850 mm |
| Height | 1,770 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,815 mm |
| Boot (third row folded) | 813 litres |
| Seating | 6 or 7 |
Safety is standard, not a paid extra
Every Sorento gets 7 airbags, electronic stability control, discs on all four wheels, TPMS and ISOFIX. The Level 2 ADAS suite is locked to the (A) packs though, and that is our main gripe; a family flagship should offer adaptive cruise lower down the ladder.

Seven colours, one strong warranty
The palette runs from Glacier White Pearl to Magma Red, with Imperial Blue the pick of this office. Warranty is Kia's usual trump card: 3 years with unlimited kilometres, extendable to 5.

Should you buy one?
The Sorento asks Fortuner money and answers with a very different car. The Toyota counters with ladder-frame toughness and resale; the Kia counters with refinement, technology and the only hybrid in this space.
Our pick is the HTK hybrid at around ₹34 lakh for city-first families, or the HTX (A) diesel for the full safety suite with all-wheel drive. Skip the Black Line unless the look genuinely matters; the money buys no hardware.
For a family that wants three usable rows without paying a luxury-badge markup, the Sorento is now the most complete package in the segment.
