Volvo has updated its two big SUVs abroad. The XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids now pack a 41.2kWh battery, more than double the old 19kWh unit. That pushes electric-only range to 200km on the XC60. Here's the catch for Indian buyers: none of this powertrain reaches you. India still gets the 250hp mild-hybrid, priced at ₹70.90 lakh and ₹98.80 lakh.
What's actually new (and what India misses)
The headline change is the battery. Both PHEVs now use a 41.2kWh pack instead of the old 19kWh one. On top of that, the XC60 gets a proper styling refresh inside and out. The XC90 mostly keeps its old look but gains the new software. Now the bad news for India. Volvo does not sell the plug-in hybrid (PHEV means a petrol engine plus a battery you can charge from a plug) here. So the big battery jump, the 200km e-range, the 461hp output, none of it applies to the cars in our showrooms. India carries on with the 2.0-litre petrol and a 48V mild-hybrid (a small system that helps the engine, but can't drive the car on electric alone).

SUVXC60 exterior: new Thor DRLs, cleaner tail
The XC60 is the one that changed the most. Volvo redesigned its trademark T-shaped 'Thor's Hammer' LED daytime running lights (the bright strips up front). The grille and front bumper are new too, with revised air intakes. New alloy wheel designs are on offer, from 18 to 22 inches. At the back, the tail-lights look cleaner and the bumper drops the sharp creases of the old car for a smoother shape. It's an evolution, not a redesign. The XC90, by contrast, carries over its existing look almost entirely.

SUVInterior & tech: bigger 11.2-inch screen for both
Both SUVs get an 11.2-inch touchscreen running Volvo's latest Car UX software. On the XC60, the dashboard is revised and the screen sits more neatly, with redesigned centre air vents for a tidier look. The seats and upholstery stay the same. The safety kit also gets an upgrade abroad. The ADAS package (safety tech that can warn you or brake for you) now uses newer radar, camera and sensor hardware. The XC90 gets the same software but no major cabin overhaul beyond that.
The PHEV numbers: 461hp and 200km on electric
This is where the gap between global and India gets wide. The global XC60 PHEV makes a combined 461hp and 759Nm (that's 55hp and 90Nm more than before) and does 0-100kph in 4.8 seconds. Its WLTP electric range jumps from 79km to 200km, a 121km leap. The XC90 PHEV makes 461hp and 751Nm, hits 100kph in 5.2 seconds, and now covers 162km on electric, up from 66km. There is a small penalty. The bigger battery adds 47kg to the XC60 (now 2,197kg) and 36kg to the XC90 (2,386kg). Compare that to India's 250hp mild-hybrid and the difference is stark: 211hp and about 130km of e-range that Indian buyers simply don't get.
India pricing & availability: nothing changes yet
For now, the India-spec cars stay exactly as they are. The XC60 is ₹70.90 lakh and the XC90 is ₹98.80 lakh, both ex-showroom. On-road prices will be higher after road tax, registration and insurance, and that varies by state. Volvo has not announced when, or if, the facelift styling reaches India. The company says some of the styling, screen and tech updates 'could eventually' be carried over. If a PHEV version ever lands here, expect a meaningful premium, since importing the battery pack adds heavy duty. Treat a PHEV launch as wait-and-see, not confirmed.
Buy now or wait?
If you're eyeing an XC60 or XC90 today, there's little reason to hold out for the facelift. India isn't getting the powertrain upgrade, and even the styling and screen changes aren't confirmed for us. Current stock could bring clearance deals, which sweetens the ₹70.90 lakh and ₹98.80 lakh price tags. So the honest read: buy now if you want a Volvo SUV and like the current design. Wait only if the new Thor DRLs and 11.2-inch screen matter enough to you, and you're willing to gamble on an uncertain India update. If you specifically want a plug-in hybrid Volvo, this facelift changes nothing for you yet.
