Volkswagen is electrifying its biggest seller. The Tiguan is VW's best-selling model worldwide, and now there's an all-electric version coming, called the ID.Tiguan. It debuts in early October 2026 and will be sold next to the petrol and hybrid Tiguan.
ID.Tiguan confirmed for October 2026 debut
VW has confirmed that the electric Tiguan will be unveiled in early October 2026. Its name is ID. Tiguan. It’s the third EV launch under this wave for the brand after the smaller ID.Polo and ID.Cross. It will be a direct successor to the existing ID.4 SUV and its sloping-roof cousin, the ID. 5. So VW is taking two older EVs and putting them under one familiar nameplate that buyers trust already.
How big is the Tiguan name for VW?
Huge. The Tiguan is VW's single best-selling model across the world. In the past year, deliveries of the Tiguan and its three-row version, the Tayron, crossed one million units. Putting an electric car under that name is a smart move. It borrows the trust of a proven family SUV, rather than starting from scratch with a new ID badge that many buyers don't recognise.
Design: Tiguan looks meet ID styling
The ID. From the official preview pics, the Tiguan looks like a cross between a regular Tiguan and VW’s ID electric range. You have sleek LED lights and a wide, heavy stance that rests on the road. The roof meets a sloping C-pillar (rear roof pillar) along with an upright tailboard. The test cars are still heavily camouflaged (covered in disguise wrap), so treat the finer details with caution for now.
Expected powertrains: multiple battery and motor options likely
VW hasn’t announced the battery or motor numbers yet. However, the official pictures show two slightly different prototypes. This suggests more than one powertrain option will be available when the covers come off in early October. Expect different battery sizes and motor outputs, with probably single-motor and dual-motor (all-wheel drive) versions. All of this should be taken as expected, not confirmed, until VW releases the spec sheet.
Will the ID.Tiguan replace the ID.4 and ID.5?
Yes, that's the plan. VW has confirmed the ID.Tiguan is the successor to both the ID.4 and the ID.5. The ID.4 was the regular SUV; the ID.5 was the sportier fastback version. One electric Tiguan now takes over for both. Global sales are expected to begin in 2027, with the EV slotting in alongside the current petrol and strong-hybrid Tiguan.
India launch: no confirmation yet
Here's the honest part. VW has not confirmed the ID.Tiguan for India. There's no launch date, no price, and no official word on whether it's even coming here. VW India currently doesn't sell the ID range locally, so this remains a global story for now. We'll update the moment VW India says anything concrete.
Rivals: the electric mid-size SUV space
Globally, the ID.Tiguan will fight a crowded set of electric mid-size SUVs. Think along the lines of the Skoda Enyaq, the Ford Explorer EV (which already shares VW's electric parts), the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6. In India, if it ever comes, it would land in a space warming up with the Mahindra BE 6, Tata Curvv EV and Hyundai Creta Electric. But that's a big if for now.
