The XUV 3XO AX5 is the variant most buyers land on when they walk into a Mahindra showroom. It's the mid-spec, and Mahindra prices it between ₹10.30 lakh and ₹11.88 lakh (ex-showroom). But the MX3 Pro below it is ₹79,000 cheaper, and the top AX7 goes up to ₹15.04 lakh. So does the AX5 hit the sweet spot or fall between two stools?
AX5 prices in full: Petrol, diesel, automatic
Here's the AX5 line-up, all ex-showroom. The petrel manual is ₹10.30 lakh. A diesel manual is ₹11.40 lakh. The petrol automatic (6-speed torque converter) costs ₹11.88 lakh. On-road prices run higher once you add road tax, registration, and insurance, which vary by state. In Mumbai, the AX5 petrol manual works out to roughly ₹12.27 lakh on-road. Check your RTO for the exact figure where you live.
What AX5 adds over MX3 Pro: The ₹79k gap
This is the real decision. The MX3 Pro petrol manual is ₹9.51 lakh, so the AX5 asks ₹79,000 more. The MX3 Pro diesel is ₹10.86 lakh, cutting the gap to ₹54,000 on diesel. Mahindra hasn't published a clean AX5-vs-MX3-Pro feature split, so we won't guess at the exact kit. What we can say: AX5 is the trim where the 3XO starts feeling loaded rather than basic, and it's the cheapest way into the SUV's more premium features. If you're a petrol buyer and want more than the bare essentials, this ₹79k step is where it happens.
Engine and performance: 110 bhp petrol, 115 bhp diesel
The petrol is a 1.2-liter turbo making 110 bhp at 5,000 rpm. The diesel is a 1.5-liter, making 115 bhp at 3,750 rpm, with strong torque (pulling power) up to 300 Nm. Owners rate the turbo-petrol highly for city pace and highway overtaking. One buyer who's done 6,000 km, including two Spiti trips, says the performance and comfort still feel like day one. The pickup is peppy, and the car feels planted at speed. For a family running errands in town and doing the odd weekend trip to Lonavala, either engine is more than enough.
Mileage: Claimed vs real
Mahindra claims 18.89 kmpl for the petrol and 20.6 kmpl for the diesel (ARAI, a government test that always reads higher than real driving). Treat those as the ceiling. Owners are happy with highway efficiency but flag that the petrol isn't the most frugal in city traffic. So if you drive mostly in stop-go city conditions, expect real petrol figures well below the claim. Diesel is the smarter buy for high monthly running.
AX5 vs Magnite, Punch and Exter
At ₹11.88 lakh for the petrol AT, the AX5 sits right at the top of its rivals' range. The Nissan Magnite CVT tops out at ₹11.13 lakh, about ₹75,000 cheaper. The Tata Punch stops at ₹10.67 lakh and the Hyundai Exter at ₹9.61 lakh, so both are pure sub-4-meter players that never climb this high. Against the Magnite, the 3XO hits back with a bigger, torquier diesel option and a cabin owner's call premium. But you are paying a clear premium for it, so the 3XO makes sense only if that extra grunt and features matter to you.

SUVBuy the AX5, or step down to the MX3 Pro?
If you're a petrol buyer who wants the loaded feel without the top-spec price, the AX5 fits the bill at ₹10.30 lakh. Diesel buyers face a tougher call: the MX3 Pro diesel is only ₹54,000 less, so the AX5 diesel is an easier yes. Two honest niggles carry across the range from owners: boot space is tight for a full family's luggage, and the infotainment can throw the odd minor software glitch. Neither is a deal-breaker but is worth a mention. The value pick here is the AX5 petrol manual at ₹10.30 lakh.
