Mahindra will show its Scorpio-N Pickup to the world on 15 August. A near-production test car has been spied in Maharashtra, wearing a bold new face and a long load bed. The big question for Indian buyers isn't the looks. It's whether we get it, and at what price.
What's new: bold grille, vertical LEDs and a proper dual-cab layout
This is the first time we've seen the production fascia (front face), not the SUV's grille borrowed onto a test mule. The grille is much larger and bolder than the Scorpio N SUV's. Headlights look slimmer, with C-shaped LED DRLs (daytime lights) and vertically stacked fog and cornering lamps for a sportier look. At the back sit vertical LED tail lamps and a high-mount stop light on the tailgate. It's a dual-cab (four-door, seats four to five) with a long bed for carrying goods. Inside, expect the just-updated SUV's kit: panoramic sunroof, Level-2 ADAS (safety tech that can brake and steer for you), a 12.3-inch touchscreen and 540-degree cameras.
Engine: will it get the 2.2L diesel, and both petrol and diesel?
The pickup is expected to use the same 2.2-litre turbo diesel as the Scorpio N SUV. In the SUV, that engine makes up to 172 bhp and 400 Nm of torque (pulling power that shifts heavy loads with ease). A high-output tune of about 173 bhp is likely here. You get a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, plus the option of Mahindra's 4XPLOR 4WD system. There's a strong chance Mahindra offers diesel only at first, which makes sense for a load-lugging truck. The SUV's 200 bhp petrol may sit this one out.
Expected price: SUV extension or a Toyota Hilux rival?
This is the whole story. The Scorpio N SUV runs from ₹13.69 lakh (Z2 petrol) to ₹25.49 lakh (Z8 L, ex-showroom). The Toyota Hilux sells north of ₹30 lakh. If Mahindra prices the pickup as an extension of the SUV range, say ₹20–25 lakh in the zone of the Z8 diesel variants (₹19.86–21.99 lakh), it undercuts the Hilux by ₹5–10 lakh. That would make it a far more accessible lifestyle truck. Price it at Hilux parity, and the value case gets thin fast. Mahindra can clearly go aggressive here. Whether it will, we don't know yet.

Toyota Hilux
PickupHow it fits Mahindra's Scorpio-N lineup
The Scorpio N is a 7-seat family SUV. The pickup swaps the third row and boot for a load bed, so it's a different animal for a different buyer. Think a farm owner, a business that hauls cargo, or someone who wants a rugged weekend truck. Within our catalogue there's no true pickup rival; the Thar (₹10.32–17.99 lakh) is a lifestyle 4x4 but not a load carrier, and the Bolero Neo (₹8.99–10.79 lakh) is a compact SUV. So the pickup would open a new segment slot for Mahindra rather than eat into its own SUVs.
India launch confirmed? What the Aug 15 debut actually means
Not yet. Mahindra follows a tradition of unveiling new products around Independence Day, and the pickup is set for a global debut in Mumbai on 15 August. But a global debut is not the same as an India on-sale date. It's still unclear whether Mahindra will actually sell this pickup here. Toyota and Isuzu already play in this space, so demand exists. Until Mahindra confirms an India launch, booking window and price, treat everything about local availability as expected, not confirmed.
Should you wait for the pickup or buy the SUV now?
If you want a 7-seat family SUV today, just buy the Scorpio N SUV. The Z6 diesel (172 bhp) at ₹17.17 lakh manual is the sweet spot for kit-per-rupee, and the Z8 L diesel at ₹21.99 lakh tops it off. There's no reason to wait, because the pickup is a completely different vehicle. If you specifically want a lifestyle truck with a load bed, hold on, but don't hold your breath. Wait for Mahindra to confirm the India launch and, more importantly, the price. If it lands around ₹20–25 lakh, it's a genuinely tempting alternative to the ₹30 lakh-plus Hilux. If not, the value story falls apart.
