After decades built on big diesel and petrol engines, Land Rover has finally made an electric car. The Range Rover Electric is the brand's first battery-only model (BEV), and it packs serious punch: 542 hp and a claimed 535 km of real-world range. Bad news for us, though. There's no India price and no launch date yet, so local buyers will have to wait.
Range Rover Electric price and India launch status
Let's be clear upfront. Land Rover has NOT announced an India price or a launch date. Reservations have opened in overseas markets, but nothing has been confirmed for us. When it does come, expect it to sit above the current diesel Range Rover, which already crosses the ₹2 crore mark on-road here. So this is a global reveal, not an India launch. Treat any number you see floating around as a guess until JLR India speaks.
542 hp, 4.3s to 100 km/h: how quick is it?
The Range Rover Electric uses two 260 kW electric motors, one on each axle. Together they make 542 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque (pulling power). That's enough to push this big, heavy SUV from 0-100 km/h in about 4.3 seconds. To put that in plain terms, it hits highway speed faster than most sports sedans. This is the most powerful Range Rover BEV yet, and it stays all-wheel drive like every Range Rover before it.
Battery and charging: 118.5 kWh, 535 km, 22-minute top-up
Under the floor sits a big 118.5 kWh battery (kWh is the battery size, like a fuel tank for electric cars). Land Rover claims up to 535 km of real-world range, not just a lab number, which is a strong figure for such a large SUV. On a real Delhi-to-Jaipur run with AC on, expect a bit less, but it should still cover the trip comfortably. Charging is quick too. On a 350 kW DC fast charger, it goes from 10 to 80 percent in about 22 minutes, roughly one coffee stop. India has very few 350 kW chargers, though, so real charging times here will be slower.
Tech: what the driveline and app actually do
JLR has thrown a lot of new tech at this car. Intelligent Driveline Dynamics can shift rear torque from 100 percent to zero to stop the wheels losing grip. Integrated Traction Management reacts within 50 milliseconds, which JLR says manages wheel slip up to 100 times quicker than a normal engine car, useful on loose or slippery ground. There's also ThermAssist, a heat-management system that protects the battery and keeps range and charging steady in extreme heat or cold, handy for Indian summers. The Range Rover App lets you cool the cabin, warm the steering wheel, check the lock, see live location and charge status, and schedule charging while it's plugged in.
Variants: standard, long-wheelbase and First Edition
You can pick the Range Rover Electric in standard or long-wheelbase body. The long-wheelbase gives more rear-seat legroom, the choice most chauffeur-driven Indian buyers will want. There's also a First Edition on offer, finished in Belgravia Green, Santorini Black or Varesine Blue. Inside, the First Edition gets new Light Cloud Ultrafabrics PU and Kvadrat materials. And for buyers who want something truly personal, the Range Rover Bespoke service allows near-limitless paint, materials and even custom embroidery.
Wait for it or buy a plug-in hybrid now?
Here's the honest bit. There's no India date, so if you want a Range Rover today, the plug-in hybrid and diesel models are your real options. Remember, JLR has no electric track record, while rivals like Mercedes, BMW and BYD have sold EVs here for years. That's worth thinking about for a car this expensive. If you can wait, the Electric looks genuinely strong on paper: real range, real pace, real Range Rover luxury. If you can't, a Range Rover plug-in hybrid gives you some electric running now without the wait.
