BYD Denza luxury brand debuts in India on Nov 13 with D9 electric MPV

BYD is bringing Denza, its luxury sub-brand, to India on November 13. The headline act is the Denza D9 GT, a 7-seat electric MPV over 5 metres long, expected to cost ₹60–75 lakh. If that price holds, it undercuts the Toyota Vellfire and Lexus LM by a huge margin and becomes India's first serious electric luxury MPV. But this is a debut announcement, not a full launch, so hold your horses on booking.

What is Denza, and why is BYD launching it now?

Denza started as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz back in the 2010s. Today it's a fully owned BYD brand, sitting above regular BYD cars as its luxury line. It already sells electric and plug-in hybrid models in China, Europe, Asia and South America. For India, BYD is bringing Denza in as its premium push, targeting buyers who want something plusher than the BYD Seal or Sealion 7. The timing makes sense: India's luxury MPV buyers are spending big, and no one offers them a proper electric option yet.

Denza D9 GT: price estimate, size and 7-seat layout

The D9 GT is a full-size MPV designed for passengers, not for driving. It's over 5 metres long and seats seven across three rows. We expect it to be priced between ₹60 lakh and ₹75 lakh (ex-showroom), though BYD hasn't confirmed anything yet. The cabin is finished in a brown theme with soft leatherette and wooden inserts. Sliding rear doors make it easy to step in and out, handy when you're in a saree or a suit outside a hotel. Globally the D9 packs up to three dashboard screens, powered and ventilated seats in all rows, and massaging front and middle seats. Which of these come to India, and in which trim? We'll only know on November 13.

374 bhp electric: the range question we can't answer yet

Only the all-electric D9 is expected for India, with 374 bhp on tap. That's plenty for a heavy MPV around town and on the highway. Globally the electric D9 uses a large 115 kWh LFP blade battery (kWh is the battery size), giving roughly 800 km of claimed range. The real-world range on Indian roads will be lower, think around 70% of any claim, so maybe 550–600 km with AC on and a full load. But BYD hasn't shared the India-spec battery, range cycle, DC fast-charge time or 0–100 km/h yet. These are the numbers that decide whether the D9 makes sense, and we simply don't have them. Treat 800 km as a brochure ceiling until BYD confirms.

D9 vs Vellfire vs Lexus LM: the ₹60 lakh undercut

The D9 GT lands straight at the Toyota Vellfire and Lexus LM. The Vellfire costs about ₹1.32 crore and runs on petrol-hybrid. The Lexus LM sits above ₹2 crore. If Denza prices the D9 at ₹60–75 lakh, it undercuts the Vellfire by ₹60 lakh or more. And it's the only electric choice in this space. The flip side: Toyota and Lexus have decades of trust, resale value and service reach. BYD and Denza are brand new at this level in India. So the D9 wins on price and running cost, but has to prove itself on after-sales and peace of mind.

Denza Z9 GT: a 1,140 bhp electric shooting brake too

Denza's other star for November 13 is the Z9 GT, a sleek five-door shooting brake (a sporty estate-style car). This one is the opposite of the D9. The electric version makes a huge 1,140 bhp and 1,210 Nm of torque (pulling power) from three motors. It uses a 122 kWh battery for around 600 km of claimed range. Think of it as a rival to the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT. It's over 5 metres long too, so it's big but low and fast. Pricing for the Z9 GT hasn't been hinted at yet.

November 13 debut: what to expect and what we won't know

November 13 is the brand's India reveal, not necessarily the day you can book. Expect BYD to show the D9 and Z9 GT in the metal and confirm the Denza name and positioning. What may still be missing: final ex-showroom prices, the exact India battery and range, DC fast-charge times, warranty terms and dealer network details. Also remember there's no central cash subsidy on electric cars. Some states, like Maharashtra, Gujarat and Delhi, waive road tax or registration, so check your local RTO for the real on-road savings.

Should you wait for the D9 or buy a Vellfire now?

If you need a luxury MPV today and want proven service, the Vellfire or Lexus LM still make sense. But if you can wait a few months and want to cut running costs with electric, the Denza D9 GT is worth watching closely. Our Expert Take flags the big ifs plainly: success depends on the final price, the real range and charging support. Don't book on the debut hype alone. Wait for the confirmed India range, the DC charge time and whether a home charger is included or costs extra. For a chauffeur-driven buyer who does mostly city miles and wants to go electric, the D9 could be the sharpest-value luxury MPV in India, if the numbers hold.
