The BMW 320d Sport is back on sale in India at ₹42.10 lakh (ex-showroom). BMW quietly dropped this entry diesel trim in March 2020, and now it returns as the cheapest way into a diesel 3 Series. The big deal? It's ₹5.40 lakh cheaper than the loaded 320d Luxury Line, and sits barely ₹40,000 above the entry petrol.
BMW 320d Sport price: ₹42.10 lakh and how it fits the range
The 320d Sport comes in at ₹42.10 lakh (ex-showroom). On-road price will be higher once you add road tax, registration and insurance, and that varies by state. This trim brings the diesel 3 Series back down to earth. Before this, the only diesel option was the 320d Luxury Line at ₹47.50 lakh. So you save ₹5.40 lakh by picking the Sport. BMW has also raised 3 Series prices by up to ₹60,000 for 2020.
320d Sport vs 320d Luxury Line: what the ₹5.40 lakh gap gets you
The feature list of both diesel trims is almost the same. But being the entry diesel, the Sport misses some kit. You lose the bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, the 12.3-inch digital driver display, and ambient lighting. What you keep matters more for most buyers. The Sport still gets a sunroof, three-zone climate control (separate AC settings for driver, front passenger and rear), and 17-inch alloy wheels. For ₹5.40 lakh saved, giving up two bigger screens feels like a fair trade.
Engine and mileage: 190PS diesel, 20.37 kmpl, rear-wheel drive
Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel. It makes 190PS and a strong 400Nm of torque (pulling power that helps effortless highway overtakes). It's mated to an 8-speed steptronic automatic. As is BMW's way, power goes to the rear wheels only, which makes it fun to drive. BMW claims 20.37 kmpl (ARAI, a government test that's always higher than real driving). Real-world figures will be lower, but a diesel 3 Series is genuinely frugal for a luxury sedan. You also get four drive modes: Comfort, Ecopro, Sport and Sport+.
Features and safety: 8.8-inch screen, sunroof, TPMS
The 320d Sport isn't stripped out. It packs an 8.8-inch touchscreen central display, three-zone climate with rear AC vents, and a rearview camera. You also get a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS, warns you if a tyre goes soft) and a sunroof. The one thing you'll notice missing next to the Luxury Line is the digital instrument cluster. If you don't need every screen, the Sport gives you the important stuff.
BMW 320d vs Mercedes C-Class 220d and Jaguar XE
The 3 Series takes on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Jaguar XE. Here the price is the story. The 320d Sport at ₹42.10 lakh undercuts a diesel C-Class, which typically sits in the ₹48-50 lakh range. And you're not giving up much for the lower price. The 320d matches the C-Class 220d's 190PS and 400Nm output. So you get comparable diesel punch for noticeably less money. The XE diesel plays in the same space too.
Verdict: buy the 320d Sport or stretch to the Luxury Line?
If you clock big highway miles and want BMW's diesel torque with rear-wheel-drive handling, the 320d Sport is the smart pick. You save ₹5.40 lakh over the Luxury Line and keep the sunroof, three-zone AC and all 400Nm of pull. The only real sacrifice is the smaller screen and no digital cluster. Buyers who must have every digital display should stretch to the Luxury Line. But for value, the 320d Sport makes the most sense, especially now that it's only about ₹40,000 dearer than the entry petrol 330i.
