Mahindra has launched the Thar OG, and it replaces the Thar you could buy until last week. The old car has not been facelifted. It has been taken off the price list and the OG takes its place, with a new trim called ZXT sitting on top.
Prices start at Rs 10.32 lakh and go up to Rs 18.99 lakh, ex-showroom. The bigger change is choice. The outgoing Thar was sold in 7 versions. The OG is sold in 15.
What the OG adds over the old Thar
The car it replaces topped out at Rs 18.00 lakh and had two trim levels, AXT and LXT. The OG keeps both and adds ZXT above them. That is where most of the new equipment sits.
There is also a new engine and gearbox pairing that the old car did not offer, the 2.2 litre diesel with the automatic in rear wheel drive. Earlier you could only get that diesel automatic with four wheel drive.
Engines
Three engines carry over, and the numbers are the same across the range.

The 1.5 litre diesel is the only engine you cannot get with four wheel drive. If you want the Thar to actually go off road, you start from the 2.0 petrol or the 2.2 diesel.
All three run the same off road numbers: 232 mm of ground clearance, a 40 degree approach angle and a 36 degree departure angle. The petrol holds 50 litres of fuel and both diesels hold 55.
Variants, and what you get at each level
AXT is the entry point at Rs 10.32 lakh. One version only, the 1.5 diesel manual in rear wheel drive. You get the safety kit and the basics, but no touchscreen and no alloy wheels.
LXT is where most buyers will land. It starts at Rs 12.99 lakh and adds 18 things over the AXT. The useful ones are the touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, alloy wheels, cruise control, steering mounted controls, a rear wiper, roof mounted speakers, follow me home headlamps and Adventure Statistics.
ZXT is new and starts at Rs 13.99 lakh. It adds 7 more: daytime running lamps, fog lamps with cornering function, a leather wrapped steering wheel, parking assist, a tyre pressure monitoring system and a wireless charger.

Eight shades, and Mahindra has kept the names it already uses on the Thar.
Artemis Silver, Battleship Grey, Deep Forest, Everest White, Galaxy Grey, Jeans Blue, Stealth Black and Tango Red.
Which one should you buy
If the Thar is going to be a second car that mostly does city duty, the LXT with the 1.5 diesel at Rs 12.99 lakh is the sensible pick. You get the touchscreen and the alloys without paying for four wheel drive you will rarely use.
If you actually plan to take it off road, skip the 1.5 entirely. The 2.2 diesel with four wheel drive and the manual at Rs 16.43 lakh gives you the torque and the hardware for it.
The ZXT makes sense if you want the fog lamps, the parking assist and the wireless charger. It is roughly a Rs 1 lakh step over the same LXT version, which is fair for what it adds.
