What Jharkhand actually charges, from the police list

Jharkhand Police publish a public Act and Section table with the compounding amount for every offence they can settle without a court. These are taken from it exactly as written.

Offence Section First Second
Riding without a helmet 194(D) r/w 129 MVA ₹1,000 ₹1,000
Pillion without a helmet 194(C) r/w 128 MVA ₹1,000 ₹1,000
No seat belt 194(B) ₹1,000 ₹1,000
Phone at the wheel 184(iv)(c) ₹1,000 ₹10,000
Over-speeding, car 183 ₹1,000 ₹2,000
Over-speeding, passenger or goods 183 ₹2,000 ₹4,000
Driving without a licence 181 ₹5,000 ₹5,000
Driving while disqualified 182 ₹10,000 ₹10,000
No insurance 196 ₹2,000 ₹4,000
No PUC certificate 190(2) ₹1,000 ₹2,000
Triple riding 194(C) r/w 128 MVA ₹1,000 ₹1,000
Dangerous or wrong parking 122/177, 177A ₹150 ₹500
Violating a traffic sign 119/177 ₹150 ₹500
Blocking an emergency vehicle 194(E) ₹10,000 ₹10,000
Pressure horn 190(2) ₹1,000 ₹2,000
Overloading a goods vehicle 194 ₹20,000 to ₹1,00,000 ₹20,000 to ₹1,00,000

Helmet is the number worth noticing. Jharkhand charges ₹1,000, which is the full central rate, and it does not go down on a second offence or up either. Madhya Pradesh notified ₹300 for the same offence under the same Act. One third the price, one state away.

The second thing the table shows is how wide the range is. Dangerous parking is ₹150. A second offence of using a phone while driving is ₹10,000, which is the steepest jump in the list, and not providing way to an emergency vehicle is ₹10,000 the first time. The same list covers both ends.

Jharkhand Police, echallan.jhpolice.gov.in/app/actsection, all 66 rows read 14 October 2026.

Drink driving is not on that list, and that is the point

Section 185 does not appear anywhere in the 66 rows, because a drink driving case cannot be compounded. There is no amount to pay at the roadside and no settling it on the portal; it goes to court, and the penalty can include imprisonment. Ranchi recorded 62 such cases in July 2026 against 1,20,197 challans overall, so it is rare, but it is the one offence on this page that money alone does not close.

What a month of enforcement looks like in Ranchi

State-wide figures are not published in any form that could be verified. The capital’s are. Ranchi traffic police ran a drive through July 2026 and the month closed at 1,20,197 challans worth ₹7.80 crore.

Violation Ranchi, July 2026 State rate
No parking 56,032 ₹150
Riding without a helmet 51,055 ₹1,000
Red light violation 4,471 ₹150
Over-speeding 2,367 ₹1,000
No entry 1,547 ₹150
Triple riding 64 ₹1,000
Drink driving 62 Court

Two categories are almost the whole month. The larger one, no parking, is the cheapest offence in the state at ₹150. The second, helmet, is one of the most expensive at ₹1,000. Put the counts against the state’s own rates and the 51,055 helmet challans come to roughly ₹5.1 crore of the ₹7.80 crore reported, which is most of it.

That ₹5.1 crore is multiplication, not a published figure: 51,055 helmet challans at Jharkhand’s notified ₹1,000. The challan counts and the month total are reported; the rate comes from the police Act and Section table.

The month also produced 1,015 cases sent for prosecution and 984 recommendations to cancel a driving licence. Those do not clear by paying online.

Ranchi figures for July 2026 as reported by Johar Live on 1 August 2026. Rates from the Jharkhand Police Act and Section table.

Where to check a Jharkhand challan

Here, by registration number

Enter the number above. Free, and it covers the national record.

echallan.jhpolice.gov.in

Jharkhand Police’s own portal, for checking and paying. The same site carries the Act and Section list the rates above come from.

echallan.parivahan.gov.in

The national system, run by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. No service fee.

A camera challan does not announce itself

Ranchi booked 4,471 red light violations in a single month, and nobody was stopped for any of them. The notice goes to whatever mobile number sits on the vehicle record at the RTO, which on a car bought through a dealer is frequently the dealer’s number and on a second-hand car can still be the previous owner’s. Searching by registration number is the only way to be sure, and it costs nothing.

E Challan Jharkhand: frequently asked questions

How do I check a Jharkhand challan by vehicle number?

Enter the registration number in the box on this page. You can also use Jharkhand Police’s own portal at echallan.jhpolice.gov.in or the national system at echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Checking is free on all three.

What is the fine for riding without a helmet in Jharkhand?

₹1,000, under section 194(D) read with 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and the same again on a second offence. A pillion rider without a helmet is a separate ₹1,000 under 194(C). This is the full central rate; Madhya Pradesh notified ₹300 for the same offence.

What does using a phone while driving cost in Jharkhand?

₹1,000 the first time and ₹10,000 the second, under section 184(iv)(c). That tenfold jump is the steepest escalation anywhere in the Jharkhand Police Act and Section table.

Why is drink driving not in the Jharkhand fine list?

Because section 185 is not compoundable. There is no amount that settles it at the roadside or on the portal; the case goes to court and the penalty can include imprisonment. Ranchi recorded 62 drink driving cases in July 2026 out of 1,20,197 challans.

How many challans does Jharkhand issue?

State-wide totals are not published in a form that can be verified. For the capital, Ranchi traffic police issued 1,20,197 challans worth ₹7.80 crore in July 2026, of which 56,032 were for no parking and 51,055 for riding without a helmet.

I was never stopped. Can I still have a Jharkhand challan?

Yes. Ranchi alone booked 4,471 red light violations in July 2026, all of them camera-raised with no interaction. The notice goes to the mobile number on the RTO record, which is often not the current owner’s, so checking by registration number is the reliable way to know.

My car is registered in Bihar or West Bengal. Can it have a Jharkhand challan?

Yes. A challan attaches to the vehicle rather than to the state that issued the plate, so a BR or WB registration picks one up on a Jharkhand camera exactly as a JH plate does. Search by registration number and it shows whichever state raised it.

Are the fines different in Ranchi, Jamshedpur or Dhanbad?

No. Compounding amounts are set at state level, so every district in Jharkhand charges what the state charges. What differs between cities is how heavily each one enforces, and Ranchi as the capital is the most active.

Checking a vehicle registered elsewhere? Start at Check challan online, which works for every state. The state with the sharpest contrast in rates is Madhya Pradesh, where the same helmet offence is notified at ₹300.
