No Claim Bonus Discount Slabs

A discount on the own damage half of your premium, earned one claim free year at a time. It belongs to you rather than to the vehicle, so it survives a change of insurer and moves to your next vehicle, as long as you renew within 90 days of expiry. One claim resets it to zero.

Claim free period Discount on own damage premium
After 1 claim free year 20%
After 2 consecutive years 25%
After 3 consecutive years 35%
After 4 consecutive years 45%
After 5 consecutive years 50%

The discount applies to the own damage premium only. The third party portion is set by IRDAI and no bonus applies to it.

What Decides Your Premium

The car itself

Make, model, variant, engine capacity and fuel type. A larger engine sits in a higher third party slab, and a costlier car carries a higher own damage premium.

Age and IDV

Insured Declared Value is your car’s current market value and the ceiling on a total loss claim. A lower IDV cuts the premium, and it cuts the payout by the same logic.

Where it is registered

Registration city decides the zone. Metro registrations generally attract a higher own damage rate than smaller cities.

Your claim history

Claim free years build No Claim Bonus and pull the own damage premium down. A claim in the previous year resets that discount to zero.

Optional covers you select

Zero depreciation, engine protection, roadside assistance, consumables and return to invoice each add premium. None are compulsory.

Voluntary deductible

Agreeing to pay a fixed share of any claim yourself lowers the premium. It only pays off if you rarely claim.

Optional Covers

None are compulsory and each one costs extra. Availability depends on the vehicle’s age and the insurer’s rules.

Cover What it does
Zero depreciation Removes the depreciation cut on replaced parts, so a claim settles closer to full part value.
Engine protection Covers engine and gearbox damage from water ingress or oil leakage. This is the one thing flooding does not otherwise cover.
Roadside assistance Towing, jump start, flat tyre help and fuel delivery when the car stops away from home.
Return to invoice On total loss or theft, pays the original invoice value rather than the depreciated IDV.
Consumables Pays for engine oil, coolant, nuts, bolts and lubricants during a claim, which a base policy excludes.
Key and personal belongings Replacement of lost keys and cover for items inside the car, where the insurer offers it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Car Insurance

1 Is car insurance mandatory in India?
Cover for injury or damage you cause to someone else is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act for every car used on a public road. Driving without it can mean a fine, and you remain personally liable for what you cause. Cover for your own car is optional.
2 What is No Claim Bonus and how much can it save?
It is a discount on your own damage premium for every claim free year, rising from 20% after one year to 50% after five consecutive years. It stays with you rather than the vehicle, so it carries over when you change insurer or buy a new vehicle, provided you renew within 90 days of the policy expiring. A single claim resets it to zero.
3 My policy has already expired. Can I still renew it?
Yes. A lapsed policy can be renewed, but the vehicle may need an inspection before the new cover starts, and a break in cover usually means losing the No Claim Bonus you had built up. Renewing on or before the expiry date avoids both.
4 Is third party premium the same at every insurer?
Yes. IRDAI sets third party rates centrally by engine capacity, so that portion is identical wherever you buy. Insurers compete on the own damage premium, the optional covers and the service around a claim, not on the third party price.
5 Does going through this page change my premium?
No. You pay whatever the insurer quotes on their own site. The price is identical to approaching them directly.
6 What is IDV and should I reduce it to save money?
Insured Declared Value is your car’s current market value and the ceiling on what a total loss or theft claim can pay. Lowering it does lower the premium, but it lowers the payout by the same amount, so it is a false economy on a car you would need to replace.
7 Can I transfer insurance when I sell my car?
The policy can be transferred to the buyer along with the car, but the No Claim Bonus is yours and does not go with it. You can have it certified and applied to the next vehicle you insure.
