Hyundai Venue scores 5-star Bharat NCAP with best-in-segment.

The Hyundai Venue just got the one thing budget SUV buyers keep asking for: proof it protects you. It scored 5 stars at Bharat NCAP, India's own crash-test body, with an adult protection score of 31.147 out of 32. That's the highest in the compact SUV class, and it starts at ₹8 lakh.

Bharat NCAP 5-star: the raw numbers

Both the Venue and its sporty Venue N Line got 5 stars from Bharat NCAP (India's government crash-test programme). The headline figure is the adult occupant protection (AOP) score of 31.147 out of a possible 32. That's a 97% score, and Hyundai calls it best-in-segment for compact SUVs. The car also cleared child occupant protection to earn its second set of 5 stars. For context, a 5-star rating usually needs roughly 27/32 on adult protection, so the venue clears that bar with plenty to spare. Hyundai says the rating covers the full line-up, so the ₹8 lakh base car and the ₹15.83 lakh top trim carry the same crash rating.

What the scores actually mean for you

Bharat NCAP tests two main crashes. There's a frontal offset hit at 64 km/h (roughly a highway pile-up) and a side impact at 50 km/h (like a car ramming you at a junction). The adult score of 31.147 tells you the cabin held its shape and the airbags did their job across both. The child score comes from how well the car protects kids in child seats using ISOFIX mounts. A high mark here matters if you're driving a family of five to Lonavala every weekend. Hyundai says the body uses 71% high-strength steel, which is why the shell resists crushing. But remember, Bharat NCAP does not publish a separate bodyshell verdict line, so we're going by the crash scores alone.

The big win is that 6 airbags and ESC (electronic stability control, which stops skids) are standard on every variant, right from the ₹8 lakh HX 2. Hyundai lists 33 safety features as standard across the range. All variants also get all 4-disc brakes, hill-start assist and 3-point seatbelts with reminders for every seat. Level 2 ADAS (safety tech that can brake or steer for you) is on offer, but check the variant list, as it's a top-trim feature. There's also a surround-view camera and blind-spot monitor higher up the range. So even the entry buyer isn't left with a bare-bones safety sheet.

Venue vs Magnite, Punch and Exter: what you pay for safety

The Venue is not the cheapest small SUV. The Nissan Magnite starts at ₹5.65 lakh, the Tata Punch at ₹5.7 lakh and Hyundai's own Exter at ₹5.81 lakh. The venue's ₹8 lakh entry sits about ₹2.19–2.35 lakh above those base cars. But those base rivals often skip 6 airbags and ESC as standard. With the Venue, that safety kit is baked in from the start, plus you now have a fresh 5-star Bharat NCAP rating with a segment-topping 31.147 adult score. If crash safety is your top worry, that gap starts to look justified. The Tata Punch also carries a strong safety reputation, so it stays the value pick, while the Venue leans on kit and its higher adult score.

Should you buy the Venue for safety? Variant-wise verdict

For a family that puts crash protection first, the Venue makes strong sense in the ₹8–10 lakh band. Even the HX 2 petrol MT at ₹8 lakh gets 6 airbags and ESC, so you don't need to stretch to a costly trim just for safety. The 82 bhp 1.2 petrol returns about 18.5 km/l, which is fine for city runs. If you want more punch, the 118 bhp 1.0 turbo (from ₹8.91 lakh) is the sweeter engine and still frugal at 18.74 km/l. The diesel HX 2 at ₹9.95 lakh does 20.99 km/l for high-mileage drivers. Just note prices are ex-showroom, so on-road cost adds road tax, registration and insurance, which vary by state. Buy the Venue if you want proven safety without waiting for a costlier trim, but the Exter is worth a look if your budget is tighter.
