BMW has teased its fifth-generation X5 (codenamed G65) ahead of a June 30 global debut, confirming a radical shift for India: the luxury SUV will arrive exclusively in long-wheelbase guise from the second half of 2027. The move mirrors the brand's LWB success with the 3 Series Gran Limousine, 5 Series LWB, and iX1 LWB, targeting India's chauffeur-driven luxury market. Current X5 pricing spans ₹95.4–110.9 lakh; expect the stretched version to command a premium.
Why LWB-only for India?
Dealer sources confirm BMW India is dropping the standard wheelbase entirely, banking on runaway demand for stretched models. A massive share of Indian luxury SUV buyers prioritize rear-seat legroom and knee-room for chauffeur-driven use. The LWB X5 will lift rear-cabin space to challenge segment norms, porting over configurations from executive markets like China.
Neue Klasse design breaks cover
Teasers reveal a minimalist overhaul: vertical illuminated kidney grilles replace the wide horizontal units, flanked by slim dual-LED projectors. Body sides go smooth, ditching character creases for flush electronic door handles integrated into the beltline. Out back, BMW retires the two-piece split tailgate for a single motorized panel. Inside, the Panoramic Vision windshield projection system replaces the traditional instrument cluster, beaming telemetry and nav across the lower windshield edge. A large rhomboidal touchscreen handles infotainment; LWB models add multi-contour massaging rear seats and executive tables.
Five powertrains, 144 kWh batteries
The G65 rides on a reworked CLAR platform accommodating petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric (iX5), and hydrogen variants. The BEV gets a 141 kWh pack in Europe, 144 kWh for the US—massive by current standards. India's lineup will likely lean petrol/diesel/PHEV at launch, with iX5 timing unclear.
