Maruti Suzuki India is set to make automotive history by unveiling the country's first production-ready flex-fuel passenger vehicle on 4 June 2026, ahead of World Environment Day. The launch marks a significant milestone in India's push towards alternative fuels and reduced carbon emissions from the transport sector.

Whilst the company has not officially revealed which model will receive the flex-fuel technology first, industry reports strongly suggest it will be the WagonR, one of India's most popular hatchbacks. Maruti has previously showcased flex-fuel versions of both the WagonR and Fronx at various events, but the WagonR appears to be the frontrunner given its multiple public demonstrations.

The flex-fuel vehicle will be capable of running on ethanol blends ranging all the way up to E100, meaning pure ethanol fuel. This is a major technological advancement for the Indian market, where most vehicles currently run on petrol or diesel only. Flex-fuel technology allows the engine to automatically adjust to different ethanol-petrol ratios, giving buyers the flexibility to use whatever fuel is available at the pump.

The unveiling comes at a time when the Indian government is actively promoting ethanol blending to reduce crude oil imports and support the sugarcane industry. The country has already achieved 15 per cent ethanol blending in petrol and aims to reach 20 per cent by 2025. However, flex-fuel vehicles that can run on much higher ethanol concentrations represent the next frontier.

From a technical standpoint, flex-fuel engines require modifications to fuel injectors, engine management systems, and materials that come in contact with ethanol, as it is more corrosive than petrol. The pricing premium for the flex-fuel variant is expected to be minimal, making it accessible to mass-market buyers.

What it means for Indian buyers: If you're considering a WagonR or Fronx, waiting for the flex-fuel variant could be worthwhile. Ethanol is typically cheaper than petrol and burns cleaner, potentially reducing your running costs and environmental footprint. However, the availability of high-ethanol blends (E85 or E100) at fuel stations across India remains limited, so urban buyers with easy access to such pumps will benefit most in the near term.
