If your car is throwing up fuel-system trouble lately, the petrol itself could be the culprit. Automakers say contaminated E20 petrol is corroding fuel injectors and pumps, with chloride levels running hundreds of times over safe limits. The government says it's just two bad pumps. The truth sits somewhere in between, and there are a few simple things you can do right now to protect your car.
What is E20, and why does contamination matter?
E20 means petrol mixed with 20% ethanol (a farm-derived alcohol fuel). It has been the default petrol at Indian pumps since 1 April 2026. Ethanol is 'hygroscopic', meaning it soaks up water from the air and surroundings. That is the root of the current mess. When ethanol pulls in moisture and picks up chloride (a salt compound) from a dirty supply chain, the two combine into a mild acid. That acid slowly eats away at precision metal parts that touch the fuel.
The numbers: chloride 500 mg/kg vs under 1 mg/kg safe limit
This is where it gets alarming. Fuel samples pulled straight from vehicle tanks recorded chloride up to 500 mg/kg. SIAM (the carmakers' body) wants a mandatory limit of under 1 mg/kg. Samples from retail pumps showed up to 350 mg/kg. Some separate tests found up to 300 ppm against a recommended under 10 ppm. Moisture is the second half of the problem. Some samples had water over 10,000 mg/kg, with others around 7,000 mg/kg, against a permissible 3,000 mg/kg. Too much water causes 'phase separation', where the ethanol and water sink to the bottom of the tank. Your engine then sucks in this bad mixture during a drive.
Which car parts are failing, and why?
Automakers report a clear jump in replacements of fuel injectors, fuel pumps and other parts that sit in direct contact with fuel. Field checks blame corrosion and wear from excess chloride. Fuel injectors are the worst hit. They are precision parts machined to very fine tolerances, so even light corrosion throws off spray and flow. Damage can show up quickly or build up quietly over months. Exhaust-related components are also on the failure list. Mercedes-Benz India flagged similar contamination-linked damage weeks earlier, and a consumer court even ordered a Maruti Grand Vitara replacement over an E20 fuel dispute in July.
Where is it happening? North India, coast, monsoon
This is not spread evenly across the country. The problem is showing up in specific pockets, mostly in the north. Coastal regions are also at higher risk because of humid air and salty groundwater. Ageing underground storage tanks at older pumps are the prime suspect. During the monsoon, these old tanks are more likely to let water seep in, which then triggers phase separation in ethanol-blended petrol. So the fuel leaving the refinery may be fine. The contamination is likely creeping in through old tanks, pipelines, and tankers along the way.
Ministry vs SIAM: 2 pumps or an industry-wide problem?
Here is the tension. The Ministry of Petroleum says fuel quality is monitored regularly, with water ingress testing done 8 to 12 times a day at over 87,000 outlets. It tested over 2,000 samples for chloride and sulphide and found only 2 contaminated pumps in the whole country, which were shut immediately. SIAM and carmakers paint a wider picture, pointing to real component failures in the field and a systemic supply-chain weakness. Both can be partly true. Two confirmed bad pumps does not rule out low-level contamination sitting below the government's current testing thresholds, which is exactly why SIAM wants a strict chloride limit written into the rules. SIAM says it has been raising this with BIS (the standards body) for over two years with no action yet.
What you should do NOW to protect your car
You cannot test chloride at the pump, but you can lower your risk. Stick to busy, well-known fuel stations with high fuel turnover, so petrol doesn't sit in old tanks for long. Avoid filling up right after heavy rain, when water ingress risk is highest. Try not to run your tank near empty, since sediment and any settled water sit at the bottom. If your car starts running rough, stalling, or shows fuel-system warnings soon after a fill-up, note the pump and date and raise it with your service centre. Keep your fuel bills as proof. If you own a pre-2023 car, be extra watchful, as older fuel systems handle ethanol and its side effects less gracefully.
The bigger E20 picture: rollout speed vs quality control
This is really a story about blending speed running ahead of quality control. The government pushed E20 to cut the oil-import bill and boost farmer income, and the fuel switch is done and mandatory. But the pipes, tanks and audit systems carrying that fuel haven't been upgraded at the same pace. SIAM wants mandatory chloride limits under 1 mg/kg for E20 and E85, under 3 mg/kg for blending ethanol, plus audits of older pumps and chloride limits for diesel too. Expect stricter BIS rules and tighter retail audits to follow this pressure. For now, the government has ruled out bringing back pure petrol or E10 as an alternative, so E20 is what you're pumping. The fix has to come from cleaner infrastructure, not a different fuel.
