How to reset odometer
How to reset odometer -Odometer is an instrument used to measure the distance travelled by a vehicle. It can be electronic, digital or combination of both. Modern digital odometers use a computer chip to record the mileage. Odometer comes from the Greek word hodos, meaning road and trip. It was firstly came in use in 1791. It is placed in the vehicle’s dashboard.
How it works?
An odometer works in both the ways mechanically and electronically. In a mechanical odometer display is an analog needle which is driven by a flexible steel cable the other end of the cable is connected to the axil of the wheel through a spur gear mechanism, on the other hand a digital or electronic meter works through a series of sensors which convert mechanical rotation in digital outputs. An odometer is nothing more than a gear train with an incredible gear ratio.
About Mechanical odometer
It has a 1690:1 gear which means input shaft has to spin 1690 times to register 1 mile. It is turned by a flexible cable made from a tightly wound spring. The cable rotates inside a protective metal tube with rubber housing. This traditional method was used in the classic era. And even in some of the new generation vehicles to keep the old school charm alive. The overall cost for the implementation of this traditional set up is low as compared to the digital meter. But still some believe analog meter is more précised with respect to digital meter. It has two flaws i.e. it cannot read if the vehicle is moving in back ward direction. and the second flaw is it is very easy to tamper, this practice is very common in second hand automobile market.
About Digital Odometer
The name Digital Meter derived from its working, it shows the reading in numeric form rather than analogically using a pointer or needle, It works with the combination of series of sensor with defined algorithm, It has various benefits over Analog meter, It is very much easier to read and tampering in a digital meter is quite a difficult task, now in almost every vehicle digital meter is used, auto manufactures have made the implementation of digital meter as a standard practice. In digital meter not only the distance travelled but all the other information’s are also shown with details, the major benefit of digital meter is the space constraint, digital setup takes very less space with plenty of information as compared to the space required for the mechanical meter that too with very limited information of rider or driver.
Resetting a Odometer
First of all let make it clear that odometer reading is the total distance covered by a vehicle from the starting of vehicles registration, That’s the reason manufacturers have not provided the provision to reset the odometer, to let the RTO get the information of the total running of any vehicle, although vehicle manufacturer have provided the speedometer with trip function which can be reset with a simple toggle of a button. But resetting of odometer is a common practice in second hand automobile market, but it is considered as illegal because doing the same is a complete fraud for the paper works of any vehicles.

- How to find whether the odometer is reset or in original condition?
It is very much difficult to find whether the odometer of a vehicle has been reset or not. It is even impossible to judge by seeing the condition of a vehicle. It is always recommended to ask for service record from an authorized service centre.
- Is resetting an odometer is DIY kind of task?
Yes in traditional odometer i.e mechanical odometer it was possible by reverse rotating the wheel with which odometer were connected still it was a time consuming and a long process job indeed but to reset a digital odometer special kind of equipment and good technical knowledge of equipment is required. Hence, it is impossible for any person’s DIY project.
- Odometer reading is completely dependent on the tyre size of any vehicle, if tyre sizes are changed other than the OEM fitment size odometer reading will recorded wrong.
- Depreciation value of any vehicle is directly proportional to the odometer reading.
