Volvo Temporarily Discontinues EX40 in India, Plans Updated Model and EX90 Launch
Volvo India has pulled the EX40 electric SUV from sale but confirms an updated version will return before year-end, alongside the flagship three-row EX90 electric SUV launching in second half 2026.
Volvo Cars India has discontinued the EX40 electric SUV, with the model no longer available on the brand's official website. However, the Swedish luxury carmaker has clarified this is an interim measure, as an updated version of the EX40 is currently under development and is expected to arrive in India before the end of 2026.
The EX40 has had one of the longest journeys amongst electric luxury SUVs in India. It first arrived in 2018 under the XC40 nameplate as Volvo's entry-level SUV, followed by a petrol powertrain addition in 2020. The electric XC40 Recharge was introduced in 2022, marking Volvo's entry into the pure electric luxury SUV space at a time when options in that segment were considerably fewer. The most recent iteration was the XC40 Recharge Single with a single-motor setup, which was subsequently renamed from XC40 to EX40 last year as part of Volvo's broader global rebranding of its electric vehicle lineup.
With the EX40 temporarily out of the picture, Volvo's electric portfolio in India currently consists of just two models. The discontinuation creates a gap in Volvo's electric SUV range, particularly at the more accessible price point that the single-motor EX40 occupied.
Looking ahead, Volvo has ambitious plans for the Indian market in the second half of 2026. Alongside the updated EX40 relaunch, the Swedish brand intends to introduce the flagship EX90 in the country before year-end. The EX90 is Volvo's flagship three-row electric SUV and its arrival would mark a significant step up in the brand's India ambitions, bringing a full-size luxury electric offering to a market where that space is gradually opening up.
The EX90 will compete against established three-row luxury SUVs whilst offering the appeal of pure electric propulsion, advanced Scandinavian design, and Volvo's renowned safety credentials. The model's introduction signals Volvo's confidence in India's growing appetite for premium electric vehicles.
What it means for Indian buyers: The temporary withdrawal of the EX40 means fewer choices in the compact luxury electric SUV segment, though the updated model's return should bring improvements in battery technology, range, and features. The EX90's India entry is particularly significant as it will offer luxury three-row electric SUV buyers an alternative to established ICE models. Prospective Volvo electric buyers should expect the updated EX40 to command similar pricing to the outgoing model, around ₹55-60 lakh, whilst the flagship EX90 could be positioned above ₹1 Crore ex-showroom.
