Maruti Suzuki Launches India's First Mass-Market 100% Ethanol Flex-Fuel Car
Maruti Suzuki unveils India's first passenger car capable of running on 100% ethanol blend, marking a historic shift in biofuel adoption with either WagonR or Fronx model expected.
Maruti Suzuki has launched India's first mass-market passenger vehicle capable of running on ethanol blends of up to 100%, marking a significant milestone in the country's automotive fuel landscape. The commercial launch took place on 5 June 2026, following an unveiling on 4 June.
The automaker showcased two candidate models for this flex-fuel technology: the Maruti WagonR Flex Fuel, which was displayed at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2024, and the Maruti Fronx Flex Fuel, shown at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. The flex-fuel system allows the vehicle to run entirely on ethanol or any blend of petrol and ethanol, providing unprecedented fuel flexibility for Indian buyers.
This launch represents a new fuel paradigm for the Indian passenger vehicle market. Unlike earlier biofuel experiments that required complicated engineering compromises, Maruti's flex-fuel technology is designed to handle ethanol seamlessly. The vehicle can switch between fuel types without requiring manual intervention or causing performance issues.
The introduction of flex-fuel technology is particularly significant given India's push towards biofuels and reduced dependence on imported petroleum. Ethanol, which can be produced domestically from sugarcane and other crops, offers a renewable alternative to conventional petrol. The government has been actively promoting ethanol blending, with targets to achieve E20 (20% ethanol blend) across India.
Pricing details will be revealed at the commercial launch event. The vehicle is expected to be positioned competitively, given Maruti Suzuki's focus on affordability and mass-market appeal. Both the WagonR and Fronx are popular models in their respective segments, which should help drive adoption of this new technology.
What it means for Indian buyers: This launch gives Indian consumers the flexibility to choose between petrol and ethanol based on availability and pricing at fuel stations. As ethanol infrastructure expands across India, flex-fuel vehicle owners can potentially benefit from lower running costs, since ethanol is often priced lower than petrol. However, buyers should note that ethanol typically delivers slightly lower fuel efficiency per litre compared to petrol, though this is offset by the lower cost per litre.
