BYD India Confirms First Plug-In Hybrid Launch on 9 June with Sealion 6 Expected
Chinese EV giant BYD will launch its first plug-in hybrid vehicle in India on 9 June 2026, expected to be the Sealion 6 DM-i with over 1,000 km combined range and advanced tech.
BYD India is preparing to launch its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in the Indian market on 9 June 2026, marking a strategic shift from its pure-electric portfolio. Whilst the company has not officially confirmed the model name, strong indications point towards the Sealion 6 DM-i midsize SUV, which has already been spotted testing on Indian roads and showcased at earlier events.
The Sealion 6 DM-i utilises BYD's famed DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) plug-in hybrid technology, which combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack. In international markets, the Sealion 6 is offered with two battery options—an 18.3 kWh pack and a larger 26.6 kWh unit. The larger battery variant delivers an impressive combined driving range exceeding 1,000 km, addressing one of the key concerns Indian buyers have with pure EVs: range anxiety.
The plug-in hybrid setup allows the Sealion 6 to operate in pure electric mode for shorter commutes, typically offering 80-120 km of EV-only range depending on the battery size. For longer journeys, the petrol engine kicks in, either to power the vehicle directly or to charge the battery, ensuring uninterrupted travel. This flexibility makes PHEVs particularly attractive for Indian conditions where charging infrastructure remains patchy outside major cities.
In terms of features, the Sealion 6 is expected to come loaded with a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), seven airbags, dual-zone climate control, premium audio, and a 360-degree camera. Build quality and fit-finish are expected to match or exceed segment standards, as BYD targets the premium midsize SUV space.
Pricing is anticipated to fall between ₹35 lakh and ₹50 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning the Sealion 6 as a premium alternative to conventional midsize SUVs whilst undercutting pure luxury models. The alternate possibility is the smaller Atto 2 DM-i, which uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with either a 7.8 kWh or 18 kWh battery, offering combined ranges up to 998 km. However, the Sealion 6 remains the stronger contender given its previous Indian showcases.
What it means for Indian buyers: BYD's PHEV entry gives you the best of both worlds—electric driving for daily commutes with zero tailpipe emissions, and petrol backup for highway trips. If you've been hesitant about pure EVs due to range or charging concerns but want to reduce fuel costs and emissions, the Sealion 6 could be the ideal stepping stone. Expect competitive pricing and generous features typical of Chinese brands entering India.
