BYD India has officially confirmed that it will launch its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in the country on 9 June 2026. While the manufacturer has not revealed the exact model, the Atto 2 and Sealion 6 emerge as the strongest candidates, as both are available with PHEV powertrains in international markets.

The Atto 2 PHEV features a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with either a 7.8 kWh or 18 kWh battery pack. The smaller battery configuration offers a claimed combined range of 928 km, while the larger 18 kWh variant extends this to 998 km. This impressive range is achieved by combining the petrol engine's range with the electric motor's EV-only driving capability.

The Sealion 6, on the other hand, offers more powertrain flexibility with both 1.5-litre naturally aspirated and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine options. Both engines can be paired with either an 18.3 kWh or 26.6 kWh battery pack. The top-spec variant with the larger battery claims a combined range of up to 1,092 km, which would make it one of the longest-range vehicles available in India.

PHEV technology offers Indian buyers the best of both worlds: the ability to run on pure electric power for daily commutes (typically 50-90 km on electric-only mode) while having a petrol engine for longer journeys. This eliminates range anxiety, a major concern with pure electric vehicles, while still providing the benefits of electric driving for most daily use.

BYD's entry into the Indian PHEV market is significant, as the segment has been largely underserved. While several luxury manufacturers have introduced PHEV variants, BYD's models are expected to be positioned more accessibly. The Chinese automaker has already established a presence in India with its pure electric vehicles like the e6 MPV and Seal sedan.

The 9 June launch date suggests that bookings and deliveries could commence shortly thereafter. BYD has been building its dealer network across major Indian cities, which will be crucial for the success of this new PHEV offering.

What it means for Indian buyers: The BYD PHEV launch addresses a critical gap in the Indian market. Buyers who are interested in electric mobility but worried about charging infrastructure and range limitations now have a practical alternative. PHEVs allow users to drive electric for daily commutes while retaining petrol power for highway trips and long journeys. With combined ranges exceeding 900 km, these vehicles can match conventional cars for convenience. The technology also helps buyers adapt gradually to electric driving without making a complete leap to pure EVs. Pricing will be crucial, but BYD's track record suggests competitive positioning.
