BYD Confirms First India PHEV Launch on 9 June with Atto 2 or Sealion 6 Expected
BYD India has released a teaser confirming its first plug-in hybrid model will debut on 9 June 2026. The Atto 2 DM-i and Sealion 6 DM-i are the leading candidates, both offering combined ranges exceeding 900 km with petrol-electric powertrains.
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is set to make a significant move in the Indian market by introducing its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) on 9 June 2026. While BYD has released a teaser confirming the arrival, the company has not officially revealed which model will carry the PHEV powertrain for India.
Based on BYD's global portfolio, two models emerge as the strongest contenders: the Atto 2 DM-i and the Sealion 6 DM-i. Both vehicles are offered with plug-in hybrid technology in international markets and would suit the Indian buyer profile.
The Atto 2 DM-i features a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine paired with either a 7.8 kWh or an 18 kWh battery pack. The smaller battery configuration offers a claimed combined driving range of 928 km, while the larger battery variant extends this to 998 km. This dual-powertrain approach allows the vehicle to run on electric power for shorter urban commutes while relying on the petrol engine for longer journeys.
The Sealion 6 DM-i, on the other hand, is available with two engine options: a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated unit and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Both can be paired with either an 18.3 kWh or a 26.6 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed combined range of up to 1,092 km in the top configuration. This makes it one of the longest-range PHEVs in BYD's portfolio.
BYD's entry into the PHEV segment in India comes at a strategic time when buyers are increasingly looking for electrified options but remain concerned about pure EV charging infrastructure and range anxiety. PHEVs offer the best of both worlds, combining electric efficiency for daily use with petrol-powered flexibility for longer trips.
Pricing will be crucial for BYD's PHEV success in India. Given the brand's competitive positioning in the pure EV segment, the PHEV model is expected to be priced attractively, likely in the ₹25-35 lakh range depending on the variant and battery size.
What it means for Indian buyers: BYD's first PHEV addresses a key pain point for Indian buyers—range anxiety and charging infrastructure concerns—while still offering substantial electric-only driving capability. This could be a game-changer for those wanting to transition to electrified mobility without committing to a pure EV.
